  1. How a GPS taxi meter works

Mechanical and pulse-based taxi meters are easy to tamper with and often lead to fare disputes. A GPS taxi meter calculates fares from satellite-measured distance and waiting time, prints a receipt and sends trip data to the operator, so passengers trust the fare and operators trust the revenue.

How a GPS taxi meter works

The driver starts the meter when the passenger boards.

The meter measures distance by GPS and waiting time when the taxi is stopped or slow.

The fare is calculated from the tariff (base fare, per km, waiting rate, night surcharge).

At the end of the trip, the meter prints a receipt and saves the trip record.

The record is sent to the operator’s platform over the mobile network.

Benefits for operators

No meter tampering: distance comes from GPS, not wheel pulses that can be manipulated

Revenue visibility: every trip and fare is recorded centrally

Fewer complaints: printed receipts and transparent fare calculation

Passenger safety: an emergency button (ATL-50M) sends alerts with location

Tariff updates: change fares across the fleet without visiting every taxi [EDITOR: confirm remote tariff update]

Regulations

Many cities and transport authorities set rules for taxi meters, including approved tariffs, sealing and calibration checks. Confirm local requirements and approvals before deployment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is a GPS meter more accurate than a pulse meter? GPS meters are not affected by tyre size or tampering with the speed sensor. Good meters also handle tunnels and signal loss correctly.

Can the meter print receipts? Yes. Both Atlanta models include a thermal printer.

Can I track my taxis with the meter? Yes. The meter’s GPS and mobile connection send trip data to the operator.

Do you supply meters for international markets? Yes. Ask our team about the model and tariff configuration for your city.
